3D PRINTING, EXPLAINED SIMPLY

What do those
letters mean?

No homework required. Here’s the plain-English version of the materials and terms you’ll see when ordering.

PLA

The everyday plastic

A hard plastic that works well for indoor organizers, gifts and display pieces. Think of a sturdy desk accessory. It can soften in heat, so tell us if your part will sit in a hot car.

What does PLA stand for?

Polylactic acid

PETG

The tougher plastic

A hard plastic that is generally less brittle than standard PLA. Think of a practical holder, clip or bracket. It still has limits; we check the design and how you plan to use it.

What does PETG stand for?

Polyethylene terephthalate glycol-modified

TPU

The bendy plastic

A flexible plastic that feels more like firm rubber. Think of a bumper, flexible foot or protective sleeve. How bendy it is depends on the material and design. Available depending on the job.

What does TPU stand for?

Thermoplastic polyurethane

Filament
The plastic “string” on a spool. The printer melts it and lays it down to build your object.
STL / 3MF
Files that describe a 3D model. Think of them as the digital instructions for the shape. A 3MF can also contain colours and print settings.
Slicing
Preparing your model for the printer by dividing it into thin layers. We handle this part.
Layer lines
The fine lines you may see on a finished print. The printer builds the object one thin layer at a time.
Infill
The structure inside the print. Like the inside of a honeycomb, it can leave spaces rather than being completely solid.
Supports
Temporary plastic scaffolding that holds up overhanging parts during printing. It is removed afterwards and can leave small surface marks.
Purge material
Extra plastic pushed out to clear the nozzle, especially when changing colours or materials. This may count toward billable material.
Build volume
The space available for one printed piece. Our maximum is approximately 256 × 256 × 256 mm, with practical limits depending on the setup.

Still unsure? Tell us how the part will be used when requesting a quote. We’ll help you pick a material.

RIGHT-SIZED PRINTING

Big ideas can start small.

Our Bambu Lab A1 printers support single-part prints up to approximately 256 × 256 × 256 mm. Usable space depends on the model and print setup. Larger models may sometimes be divided into multiple printable sections and reviewed individually. PLA and PETG are our primary materials; TPU may be available depending on the job.

A FEW GOOD QUESTIONS

Before you print.

Do I need to know anything about 3D printing?

No. Send us a file or model link and tell us what you want. We handle the print setup and help you choose a suitable material.

What file formats can I send?

STL and 3MF are the preferred formats. Upload your file through the quote form, or contact us if you have a different format.

Can I send a MakerWorld/Printables/Thingiverse link?

Yes. Paste the link into the quote form. You must own the model or have the permission or licence needed to have it reproduced. You are responsible for confirming the required rights and permissions. U3K does not independently verify each model’s licensing status. See Model Licensing & Terms.

How quickly will my order be ready?

Next-business-day completion is our standard target for many normal jobs after approval, not a guarantee. Larger, complex, multi-colour, specialty-material or high-volume jobs may take longer. Your quote confirms the expected timing.

What size can you print?

Our Bambu Lab A1 printers support a maximum single-part build volume of approximately 256 × 256 × 256 mm. The usable space depends on model orientation, supports and the print setup.

Can you print larger objects?

Sometimes. Larger models may be divided into multiple printable sections. We review each project individually and confirm what is practical before quoting.

What materials are available?

PLA and PETG are our primary materials. TPU may be available depending on the job. Tell us how the part will be used so we can help choose an appropriate material.

Where is pickup?

Pickup is in South Edmonton. Exact pickup details are provided after your order is confirmed.

Do you deliver?

Yes. Local Edmonton-area delivery is available. We confirm availability and the delivery cost with your order.

Can you design a part for me?

Our main service is printing existing models. Contact hello@u3k.ca with your idea, dimensions and any photos so we can discuss whether design help or an adjustment is possible. Design work is reviewed separately.
